John F. Walters, M.D., A.M.E.
Dr. John Walters is a recreational pilot who’s spent plenty of time in both the left seat and the exam room. He knows the flight physical isn’t anyone’s favorite part of flying, so his goal is to make the process as smooth, straightforward, and pilot-friendly as possible.
Based in Charleston, SC, Dr. Walters has been an FAA-designated Airman Medical Examiner (AME) for over six years. He’s also board certified in Emergency Medicine, with a 35-year career in the ER—30 of those as Director of the Roper Hospital Emergency Department. He’s a proud graduate of The Citadel and the Medical University of South Carolina.
Flying runs in the family. John got his start at 15, flying a J3 Cub off a grass strip on Isle of Palms with his brothers. His father was a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and Eastern Airlines captain, and his brother flew F-16s for 24 years before joining UPS as a captain.
From student pilots to seasoned pros, Dr. Walters brings decades of medical experience—and a lifelong love of flying—to every exam.
